Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance - problems and stuff

What to play? Is it worth it? Where to buy? Which settings should i use? Which PC do I need for what game? How to record gameplay? In other words, anything gaming related.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance - problems and stuff

Post by Sethioz »

It's a really good game, but there's also really annoying and dumb bugs or something like that. Game engine totally sucks big time. It was same in supreme commander and worse in expansion (forged alliance).
This is what it says:

Code: Select all

Minimum System Requirements
System: 1.8 GHz processor or equivalent
RAM: 512 MB
Video Memory: 128 MB
Hard Drive Space: 8000 MB

Recommended System Requirements
System: 3.0 GHz Intel or equivalent AMD processor or equivalent
RAM: 1024 MB
Video Memory: 256 MB
I have old pc, but still. here's my specs:
3.3GHz Pentium 4
RAM: 1024mb
Video Memory: 512MB nVidia 7600GS
it meets recommended specs, but here's the thing !
It lags like SHIT for me...i barely get 10fps. im getting 40fps on totally empty places and on SMALL areas (campaign maps that hasn't expanded yet). So why they put total SHIT into requirements ?!?! I just don't get it. I wouldn't had even got it if i would have known that i can't play it normally. Today before uninstalling it, i was getting 1-2fps. WTF ?? and my PC is better than recommended...so whats the fucking deal with it ?
Well it says that recommended requirements is meant for campaign and up to 4 player maps in skirmish/multiplayer, but im getting 1-2fps in campaign. NOTE that i was playing on minimum graphics. 1024x768 and everything else on minimum. actually it was NOT a video card, because it had no effect when i changed it...was still 1-2fps.

I remember that command & conquer tiberium wars had way better graphics and was running just fine. 10fps was minimum i got. it was around 20fps all the time..even in middle of crazy battle, but SupCom simlpy doesn't run. I had same problem with supreme commander. I asked around lil bit and some ppl said its cpu...that it needs better cpu. at least like 2.4ghz dual, but thats not the point. im sure it would run FINE on better computer. problem is WHY developers put some JUNK into recommendation ???

Forged Alliance is great. It now has 4 different factions and all of them are quite different from eachother. Ofcourse this Alien, Seraphin, race seems the best. They also added a nice thing to Aeon race, experimental resource generator which gives you infinite resources...quite awsome :) well i uninstalled it anyways, because its impossible to play with 1-2fps. I dont understand where they took those specs, but it AINT running on
Minimum System Requirements recommended system, which is:
System: 3.0 GHz Intel or equivalent AMD processor or equivalent
RAM: 1024 MB
Video Memory: 256 MB
I don't see it saying dual core, but it would need TWICE this power at least. recommended should be 2.4 quad, 2gb ram and 1024mb SLi ..at least. then it would be possible to play it NORMALLY with 30fps constantly...if somebody has that PC or even better then plz try and let me know how it runs.

well gameplay and everything is really good. graphics are nice too, but game engine totally sucks.
also i don't like those cannons that shoot over 40km map easily. so basically you can play only 81km maps (only 1 i think) normally. otherwise when you put up a cannon/artillery, then you win after 10-30 mins. .. which is boring.
so they should upgrade the game engine a lot and make it 81 - 200km maps, so you can't easily win a map..and playing without those super weapons is also lame. not using the stuff that is in game..just lame.
for example .. Tomb Raider Anniversary has super good graphics and DOES NOT lag at all on 1200x1600 on my pc, but Devil May Cry 4 has crappier graphics and lags like shit...so its possible to have good graphics and no lag, but supreme commander lags even when there is nothing on screen.

yes those dialogues lag shit out of game. it stucks for 1-3 secs usually. as i said..really, really shit game engine.
tried Tiberium Wars today, again! it has better graphics, but it runs just FINE with high graphics (not max, but high). with max graphics i get around 5-10fps probably, but havent tried. well in SupCom i get 10fps max lol (30fps was max, but in empty place on a SMALL map).
In Tiberium Wars i had like 40 Venoms (attack copter like flying crafts) attacking in one place and no lag, still had over 17fps easily. guess its cpu that lags, but why ? in Tiberium Wars you can put 8 players too. map size should not matter, because map size does not need cpu. units takes cpu usage, besides i got LAG on small maps too, in SupCom. yeah and nukes didn't lag me much

lol thts nutz. wierd thing is that nukes didnt lag for me. it lagged lil bit when i zoomed into nuke area. ofcourse i used only 6 nukes, but still. my point is that game lags like shit for me, but using 6 nukes dont lag. i guess this is where your 256mb video memory can't handle it. I would try it, but i can't even build that much or it lags me to hell.

maybe so but i must admit 100 nukes is kinda hard to handel lol and that was low effect nuke not that i expect it to handel it for 100% its only GF 8600GT but it does it pretty well.

lol i don't think that developers even tought about it. don't think that game is made for 100 nukes anyways, because Seraphin nuke needs ONLY 2 nuke defenses..it should need like 10, then it would be better.
anyways i think that my problem is my PSU after all, not ram or cpu. I got FarCry2 and my PSU gets SO HOT, but i get no lag (playing on low graphics @ 1024x786). and it crashed twice, i mean froze whole pc. When my pc is idle, then PSU blows quite cold air out, but in FC2 it was really hot. First it crashed after...mmm ..4-5 hours i think and second time i forgot my dual view mode on and it crashed after hour or so. That clearly points on a PSU, but pc shoud not crash if it is caused by PSU...at least it makes no sense, why should it crash. if pc don't have enought power then it should only slow down, not freeze.
if cpu, ram..etc overheats then it should crash, besides it wasn't that hot anyways.

EDIT:
here's FarCry 2 requirements:

Noticed a BIG difference ??? and i can play FarCry 2 NORMALLY on low. i havent tried on higher graphics, but im sure it would run quite fine on higher graphics too (not max, but higher than low, like medium) Im getting 20-40fps constantly in FC2, ofcourse there has been few places that lagged lil bit, but most games have those lag spikes. like when half of forest burns, then it lags me to 10fps or so, but thts rare. usually its around 23 all the time. in other words it runs smooth. in other toughts it can't be PSU, its not getting that hot.

new update.
tried on my new rig (not best, but better).
2.8ghz dual core cpu
3gb ram
550gb space
nVidia 512mb 9500GT

this is way over the recommended for SupCom and SupComFA. they say that recommended is optimal for 4 players maps. well when i put 4 player map and 500 units limit (1000 is max), and ofcourse set enemys on hard (not cheating, but hard, cant member names in game), then after about 10 mins game engine starts to lag BADLY. im not talking about visible lag, where game skips frames, but im talking about this:
when in real life 3 seconds passes, then in game only 1 second passes. and it gets way worse when there's more units.

i also tested it on this rig:
2.4ghz quad core
5gb ram
256mb video (some nvidia)

and you guessed it, same shit. if it would be graphics lag, then it would skip frames, not slow down the gameplay.
so it doesn't really matter how good pc you have, it is game engine that can't handle it, not pc. you can run it on that new 6-core cpu, with like nVidia tesla S1070 (16gb video memory card < video computing unit, not just card) with like 16gb of ram and it would still lag like that.
in other words, game engine seem to be limiting the performance. in most game engines, performance is limited by the computer you play it on, but in SupCom game engine limits the performance.
i just don't understand how can game companys make so bad mistakes.

maybe it has something to do with 32-bit windows, because all 3 computers had 32-bit windows (xp and home). because if im right, then 32-bit windows can only use 2gb ram per task, so it means that even thos the other rig had 5gb ram, then game can only use 2gb. still it does not explain the specifications. < it should either say that 4gb with 64-bit win required or something...
